John Henry Before the War
Life at Home
John had an average sized family of 5 people. His mother was Lucy Ryals Crouch, a housewife, and his father was John Henry Crouch Sr., a supermarket grocer. However, when John was 15, his father died and left him as the man of the house. John finished high school at the local public school in Greenville, and went on to pursue two years of college education. Shortly afterwards, he met his wife Miriam Minnie Wise, who was a school teacher. Until he was able to get a job in a field he wanted to work in, John became a grocer to provide for his new wife and widow mother. In 1940, John was able to secure a job as an accountant at a local bank on Washington Avenue in Greenville, which was one of the most popular areas in the Delta at the time. With his new job, John purchased a house on Main Street for his growing family with Miriam. In late 1940, John Henry Crouch III was born to parents John JR and Miriam Wise. John spent his final years in Greenville raising his son and working a secure job. In 1943, he enlisted to serve in the war so that he could serve his country.
